1년 동안 팔레스타인에서 인종 학살을 벌여 온 이스라엘이 레바논까지 공격하고 있다.

이스라엘은 레바논에서 민간인 대상 ‘삐삐 테러’를 자행한 데 이어 공습으로 수백 명을 학살하더니, 급기야 지상군까지 투입했다.

이런 이스라엘의 폭주는 식민 정착자 국가의 잔악한 본성을 여실히 보여 준다. 이스라엘은 아랍인들을 학살하고 내쫓아야만 존재할 수 있는 국가다.

동시에, 이스라엘의 확전은 이스라엘이 처한 어려움도 보여 준다. 이스라엘은 1년 동안 잔혹하기 이를 데 없는 인종 학살을 벌이고도 팔레스타인인들의 저항을 꺾지 못했다.

이스라엘은 전쟁을 확대해 난관을 돌파하려 한다. 중동 확전을 구실로 미국 등 서방 동맹의 더 많은 지원을 받아내려는 추악한 속셈이다.

미국 정부는 이스라엘의 확전이 아랍 지역의 광범한 저항을 촉발할까 우려하지만, 이스라엘이 무슨 짓을 벌이든 지원을 멈추지 않고 있고 앞으로도 그럴 것이다. 가자 전쟁 1년, 아니 지난 80여 년 동안 그랬던 것처럼 말이다.

미국 대선에서 누가 승리하든, 미국 정부는 자신의 ‘중동 경비견’을 포기하지 않을 것이다.

저항과 연대의 1년

1년 동안 지속되는 학살을 목도하는 것은 너무나 고통스러운 일이다. 그러나 지난 1년은 저항과 연대의 1년이기도 했다.

2023년 10월 7일 하마스를 비롯한 팔레스타인 저항 단체들이 식민 점령 국가 이스라엘을 향한 공격을 감행했다.

이스라엘과 서방 지배자들은 10월 7일 공격을 테러라고 맹비난한다. 그러나 10월 7일 공격은 식민주의와 제국주의에 맞서는 저항으로 지지 받아 마땅하다.

10월 7일 공격은 팔레스타인인들이 그저 짓밟히는 존재가 아니라, 압제자들에 분연히 맞서 싸우는 존재라는 것을 전 세계에 보여 줬다.

또한, 10월 7일 공격은 역사에서 유례를 찾기 어려운 국제적 연대를 불러 일으켰다.

세계 곳곳에서 수많은 유대인이 이스라엘을 맹렬히 규탄하며 이렇게 외쳤다. “유대인의 이름으로 학살을 정당화 말라!”

서방의 중동 침략 정당화를 위해 ‘테러리스트’로 낙인 찍히고 차별과 혐오를 겪어 온 수많은 무슬림 대중은 “이스라엘과 미국 정부야 말로 테러리스트다!” 하고 외치며 들고 일어났다.

특히, 이스라엘(과 서방)에 의해 오래도록 고통 받아 온 아랍 대중의 분노가 다시 끓고 있다. 이들은 팔레스타인인들의 고통을 외면하며 이스라엘과 협력하는 아랍 정부들을 똑똑히 노려보고 있다.

‘팔레스타인 세대’도 등장했다. 지난 학기 미국에서 시작한 팔레스타인 연대 대학생 운동은 학살 공범 조 바이든을 대선 레이스에서 낙마시켰고 이스라엘과 그 협력자들을 위협했다.

새 세대에게 팔레스타인은 이 시대 정의의 표상이 됐고, 이스라엘은 불의의 상징이 됐다. 팔레스타인의 과거, 현재, 미래를 지워버리려 한 시온주의자들의 시도는 처참히 실패했다.

가자지구에서 8000킬로미터 넘게 떨어진 한국에서도 매주 팔레스타인 연대 시위가 열리고 있고, 여러 대학에서 팔레스타인 연대 행동이 벌어지고 있다.

76년 전 못 다 이룬 인종청소 프로젝트를 완수하려다 오히려 위기에 빠진 이스라엘은 그들이 할 수 있는 유일한 방식, 즉 더 많은 학살과 파괴로 돌파구를 찾으려 한다.

그에 맞서는 더 큰 연대와 저항이 사활적이다. 이스라엘은 레바논을 제2의 가자지구로 만들려 하지만, 역사상 그 어느 때보다 고립돼 있다.

가자 학살 1년에 즈음해 이번 주말 미국과 영국 등 세계 여러 나라에서 팔레스타인 연대 행동이 열린다. 서울에서도 10월 6일 오후 2시 서울 영풍문고 본점 앞에서 집회와 행진이 열린다.

10∙6 국제 행동의 날에 참가하자. 76년 동안 불굴의 저항을 이어 온 팔레스타인인들과 함께하자.

Condemn Israel’s Ground Invasion of Lebanon!

After a year of genocide in Palestine, Israel is now attacking Lebanon.

Israel has carried out walkie-talkie terror attacks against civilians in Lebanon, killing hundreds of people in airstrikes, and has now sent in ground troops.

Israel’s actions demonstrate the brutal nature of a colonial settler state—one that can only exist by killing and displacing Arabs.

At the same time, Israel’s escalation of the war also reveals the difficulties it faces. Despite a year of brutal genocide, Israel has been unable to break Palestinian resistance.

Israel is now escalating the war in an attempt to overcome its challenges. It is a cynical move to gain more support from Western allies, including the United States, under the guise of heightened conflict in the Middle East.

The U.S. government fears that Israeli escalation will trigger widespread resistance in the Arab world. Still, it has not, and will not, stop supporting Israel—regardless of what Israel does. This has been evident throughout the Gaza war of the past year, and for the past 80 years.

Regardless of who wins the U.S. presidential election, the U.S. government will not abandon its “Middle East watchdog.”

A Year of Resistance and Solidarity

While it is painful to witness a year of continuous slaughter, it has also been a year of resistance and solidarity.

On October 7, 2023, Palestinian resistance groups, including Hamas, launched an attack against the colonial occupying state of Israel.

Israeli and Western rulers condemned the October 7th attack as terrorism, but it should be seen as a legitimate act of resistance against colonialism and imperialism.

October 7th showed the world that Palestinians are not a people to be trampled on, but a people who stand up to their oppressors.

The attack also ignited an unprecedented outpouring of international solidarity.

Jews from all corners of the globe denounced Israel, shouting, “Stop justifying genocide in our name!”

Countless Muslims, long stigmatized as “terrorists” and subjected to discrimination and hatred to justify Western aggression in the Middle East, rose up, shouting, “Israel and the U.S. government are the real terrorists!”

The anger of the Arab masses, who have long suffered at the hands of Israel and the West, is boiling over once again. They are glaring at Arab governments that collaborate with Israel while turning a blind eye to Palestinian suffering.

A new “Palestinian generation” has also emerged. The Palestine solidarity student movement, launched in the United States last semester, forced genocide accomplice Joe Biden out of the presidential race and threatened Israel and its collaborators.

For this new generation, Palestine has become a symbol of justice, and Israel a symbol of injustice. Zionist efforts to erase Palestine’s past, present, and future have failed miserably.

Even in South Korea, more than 8,000 kilometers from Gaza, weekly Palestinian solidarity demonstrations have taken place, with actions at universities in support of the Palestinian cause.

Israel, on the brink of completing the ethnic cleansing project it failed to finish 76 years ago, is trying to push forward in the only way it knows—through more killing and destruction.

Greater Solidarity and Resistance Are Vital. Israel is trying to turn Lebanon into a second Gaza, but it is more isolated than ever before in its history.

On the one-year anniversary of the Gaza massacre, solidarity actions for Palestine will be held this weekend in the U.S., the U.K., and other countries around the world. In Seoul, a protest and march will be held on October 6 at 2 p.m. near Jonggak Station, Exit 5.
