미국에서 팔레스타인 연대 캠퍼스 점거 시위가 전국으로 확대되고 있다.

뉴욕의 컬럼비아대 학생들이 캠퍼스에 텐트 수십 동을 설치하고 점거 시위를 벌인 것이 불씨가 됐다.

학생들은 이렇게 말한다. “3만 명 넘는 팔레스타인인이 죽는 것이 ‘정상’이고, 용인 가능한 일이고, 돈 되는 일로 여겨지는 사회를 받아들이길 거부한다.” “컬럼비아대학교가 우리 등록금과 기부금을, 죽음에서 수익을 내는 기업들에 투자하는 데에 더 이상 공범이 될 수 없다.” 이들은 스스로 베트남 전쟁 반대 운동과 남아프리카공화국의 아파르트헤이트에 맞섰던 자랑스러운 전통 위에 서 있으며, “팔레스타인인 인종청소와 학살을 위한 공모에 맞서는 것은 우리의 책무”라고 밝혔다.

어처구니없게도 컬럼비아대 당국은 경찰력을 동원해 학생 108명을 체포했다! 경찰이 캠퍼스에서 학생들을 대규모로 체포한 것은 1960년대 베트남 전쟁 반대 시위 이후 처음이다. 대학 당국은 정학과 기숙사 퇴출 등의 부당 징계로 학생들을 위협했다.

그러나 학생들은 이에 굴하지 않고, “[인종학살] 투자 철회와 징계 사면, 공모 종식을 위해 투쟁함으로써 팔레스타인 해방에 대한 우리의 헌신을 굳건히 지킬 것”이라며 계속해서 농성을 이어가고 있다.

그러자 하버드대, 예일대, 뉴욕대, 미시간대, UC버클리 등 곳곳에서 학생들은 서로를 고무하며 시위와 점거에 나서고 있다. 대학 교직원들과 지역 주민들도 학생들에 연대하는 시위를 벌이고 있다.

이스라엘 비판은 유대인 혐오 아니다

이스라엘의 가장 든든한 동맹 미국 바이든 정부는 학생들을 체포하고, “반유대주의” 낙인을 찍으며 정당한 시위를 탄압하고 있다. 과연 인종 학살 공범의 행태라 할 만하다!

최근 미국 정부는 이스라엘의 가자지구 라파 지상전 계획을 승인했다. 미 의회는 36조 원에 달하는 이스라엘 군사 지원 예산안을 의결했다. 미국 내에서 학살 지원에 대한 비판 여론은 날로 커져, 이제 바이든은 가는 곳마다 “제노사이드 조(학살자 조바이든)”를 규탄하는 시위대를 맞닥뜨리고 있다.

이스라엘과 서방의 지배자들은 팔레스타인 연대 운동에 “유대인 혐오”라는 얼토당토않은 도덕적 비난을 퍼붓지 않으면 자신들의 범죄를 정당화할 수 없다는 것을 안다. 76년 동안 식민 지배로 팔레스타인인들을 짓밟고 내쫓고, 불과 200일 동안 3만 4000명이나 학살한 천인공노할 반인류적 범죄를 대체 어떻게 변호할 수 있겠는가!

시온주의와 이스라엘의 인종 학살을 비판하는 것은 결코 유대인 혐오가 아니다. 컬럼비아 대학의 농성에 유대인 학생들도 동참하고 있다. 이들은 “억압과 불의에 맞서는 유대교 전통을 계승하기 위해” 참가한다고 밝혔다. 컬럼비아 대학의 농성장에는 유대인들의 안식일 의식과 무슬림들의 기도 시간이 평화롭게 공존한다.

한국에서도 대학 당국과 정부의 공격에 굴복하지 않고 용기 있게 팔레스타인 연대 운동을 이어나가고 있는 미국 대학생들에게 진심으로 지지와 연대를 보내자! “요르단강부터 지중해까지 팔레스타인인들의 독립과 해방”을 위해 함께 목소리를 내자!

Stand in solidarity with US students’

encampment and protest for Palestine

Join us in solidarity with Palestinians!

Campus Occupations for Palestine solidarity in the United States are spreading across the country.

Columbia University students’ encampment has become a major focus and has inspired other students to mount their own actions.

Columbia students said “We refuse to accept a world where the death of over 30,000 Palestinians is normal, acceptable, or profitable.” “We can no longer be complicit in Columbia funnelling our tuition dollars and grant funding into companies that profit from death.” They also stated that Columbia students stand in a proud tradition of opposing the Vietnam War and South Africa’s apartheid, and that “it is our responsibility to stand against our inherent complicity in genocide and ethnic cleansing from Palestine to Harlem.”

Columbia authorities mobilised police forces and arrested over 108 students! The cop’s action marked the first mass arrests on campus since Vietnam War protests in the 1960s.

Undeterred, the students have continued their encampment, saying they will ‘remain steadfast in our commitment to the liberation of Palestine by fighting for divestment, amnesty and an end to complicity.’

Then, hundreds of students at Harvard University, Yale University, New York University, the University of Michigan, UC Berkeley, and elsewhere began to occupy, inspiring each other to protest. The university workers and local residents are also demonstrating in solidarity with the students.

Criticizing Israel is not anti-Semitic

The US government is arresting students, labeling them “anti-Semitic,” and suppressing legitimate protests. This is the behavior of an accomplice to genocide!

The US government recently has approved Israel’s ground invasion plan in Rafah, Gaza. The U.S. Congress has approved a $26 billion military aid bill for Israel. Criticism of U.S. support for genocide has grown so strong that Biden is now faced with protesters denouncing “Joe the Genocidal Joe” everywhere he goes.

Israel (and its allies) engages in such ignorant and ridiculous moral condemnations and attacks because it cannot otherwise justify the horrific genocide against Palestinians. There is no way to defend the heinous crimes against humanity of 76 years of colonialism, crushing, discriminating and oppressing the Palestinian people, and slaughtering 34,000 of them in just six months!

But criticizing Zionism and Israel’s genocide is in no way anti-Semitic. The Jewish students in Gaza Solidarity encampment said they are there to “continuing Jewish tradition of standing against oppression and injustice.” At liberation zone of the encampment, Jewish students celebrating Shabbat and Muslim students praying coexist peacefully.

Stand in solidarity with US university students who are courageously continuing the Palestinian solidarity movement in the face of attacks by university authorities and governments. Let’s join for the “independence and liberation of Palestinians from the River to the Sea”!
