[성명] 가자 학살 1년, 식민 점령 76년

9.25 팔레스타인 연대 대학생 공동 행동에 모이자

11개월 동안 4만 명 넘는 팔레스타인인들이 학살당했다. 그중 60퍼센트는 여성과 어린아이다. 의학 전문지 〈랜싯〉에 실린 한 보고서는 사망자 수가 최대 18만 명에 이를 수도 있다고 분석했다.

9월 들어 새 학기가 시작했지만, 가자지구에는 남아 있는 대학교가 없다. 이스라엘이 모조리 파괴해버렸기 때문이다.

최근 이스라엘은 서안지구까지 공격하고 있다. 이스라엘군과 정착민은 파괴와 살육의 수위를 점점 높이고 있다.

학살 국가 이스라엘, 학살 공범 미국 정부

미국 정부는 휴전 협상 중재자가 아니라 학살 공범이다. 미국 정부는 최근에도 200억 달러의 추가 무기 이전을 결정했다. 민주당 대선 후보 카멀라 해리스도 이스라엘을 위한 변함없는 지원을 약속했다.

미국의 지원 속에 이스라엘은 잔학한 학살을 1년 가까이 벌이고 있지만, 이스라엘은 팔레스타인인들을 꺾지 못했다. 지난 76년 동안 그랬고, 앞으로도 그럴 것이다.

가자지구와 서안지구 모두에서 팔레스타인인들은 불굴의 저항을 계속하고 있다. 팔레스타인 저항 단체 하마스의 대변인 아부 우바이다는 “수천 명이 여전히 입대를 기다리고 있다” 하고 밝혔다.

세계 각지의 팔레스타인인 난민과 그 후손들은 독립과 귀환에 대한 열망을 굳게 간직한 채 팔레스타인 연대 운동에 주도적으로 참가하고 있다.

전쟁에서 난관에 빠지자 이스라엘 내 네타냐후 반대 시위도 심화되고 있다. 그러나 이 시위가 인종청소와 팔레스타인 점령 자체를 반대하는 것은 아니다. 시온주의 국가 내부에서는 팔레스타인 해방의 희망을 찾을 수 없다.

학생 저항(Student Intifada)

팔레스타인인들의 진정한 친구는 유례 없는 규모로 계속되고 있는 글로벌 팔레스타인 연대 운동이다.

특히, 지난 학기 세계를 휩쓴 대학생들의 연대 운동은 팔레스타인인들에게 큰 힘이 됐다. 가자지구 피란민들은 학생들의 연대에 고마움을 표하기도 했다.

반면, 이스라엘과 그 동맹들은 위협을 느꼈다. 팔레스타인 연대 캠퍼스 텐트 농성이 확산될수록 네타냐후는 신경질적이 됐고, 미국 대통령 조 바이든은 대선 레이스에서 낙마했다.

미국 대학생들은 새 학년을 투쟁의 해로 만들자며 “멈추지도 쉬지도 않”고 있다. 그들은 이스라엘을 지원하는 자국 정부는 물론이고 이스라엘과 교류·협력하는 대학 당국들에도 맞서 싸우고 있다.

한국의 대학가에서도 새 학기 팔레스타인 연대 활동이 시작됐다. 지난 학기 팔레스타인 연대 텐트 농성이 벌어진 대학들에서 캠페인과 포럼이 열리고 있다. 자신의 나라에서 팔레스타인 연대 운동에 참가했던 유학생들도 속속 동참하고 있다.

이와 대조적으로 한국 정부와 교육 기관들은 오히려 이스라엘과의 교류를 늘리고 있다.

지난 7월 윤석열 정부는 이스라엘과의 기술 협력 행사(‘한국-이스라엘 이노베이션 데이’)를 역대 최대 규모로 개최했다.

서울대는 6월에 이스라엘교육연구센터를 개소했고, 부산외대는 8월에 전 주한 이스라엘 대사를 특임 교수에 임명했다. 전라북도 지자체 당국과 전북대 당국은 방위 산업 분야에서 이스라엘과의 협력을 확대하고 있다.

이스라엘의 피 묻은 손을 잡으려는 모든 시도에 맞서야 한다.

팔레스타인 해방의 대의를 지지하고 이스라엘과 그 협력자들에 맞서고자 ‘9∙25 대학생 공동 행동’이 열린다. 계속되는 점령과 박해에 맞서 분출한 ‘2차 인티파다’(2000년 9월 28일)’ 기념일을 앞두고 열린다는 점에서도 뜻깊다.

One year of massacre in Gaza, 76 years of colonial occupation

Join us in the Student Day of Action for Palestine on September 25th!

Over 40,000 Palestinians have been massacred for 11 months. 60 percent of them are women and children. A report in the medical journal 〈The Lancet〉 analyzed that the death toll could be as high as 180,000.

A new semester began in September, but there are no universities left in Gaza. Israel has destroyed them all.

Recently, Israel has expanded its offensive into the West Bank. The Israeli army and settlers are escalating the level of destruction and killing.

Israel, a genocidal state, and the U.S. government, complicit in genocide

The U.S. government is not a negotiator of a ceasefire. It is an accomplice to genocide. The U.S. government recently approved another $20 billion in arms transfers. Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris has also pledged unwavering support for Israel.

With U.S. support, Israel has been on a brutal killing spree for nearly a year, but Israel has not defeated the Palestinians. It hasn’t for the last 76 years, and it won’t for the next.

In both Gaza and the West Bank, Palestinians continue to resist indomitably. “Thousands are still waiting to enlist,” said Abu Obaida, a spokesman for the Palestinian resistance group Hamas.

Palestinian refugees and their descendants around the world have taken a leading role in the Palestinian solidarity movement, holding fast to their aspirations for independence and return.

As the war has stalled, protests against Netanyahu in Israel have also intensified. But these protests are not against ethnic cleansing and the occupation of Palestine itself. There is no hope for Palestinian liberation within the Zionist state.

Student Intifada

The true friend of Palestinians is the global Palestinian solidarity movement, which continues on an unprecedented scale.

In particular, the student solidarity movement that swept the world last semester has been a huge boost to the Palestinians. Refugees in Gaza have thanked students for their solidarity.

Israel and its allies, on the other hand, felt threatened. As the Palestine solidarity encampments spread, Netanyahu grew nervous, and U.S. president Joe Biden dropped out of the presidential race.

University students in the US are “not stopping or resting,” saying they will make this new school year a year of struggle. They are fighting against not only their own governments, which support Israel, but also university administrations that engage and collaborate with Israel.

On campuses in South Korea, Palestine solidarity activities have also resumed for the new semester. Campaigns and forums are being organized at universities where Palestine solidarity sit-ins were held last semester. International students who participated in Palestine solidarity movements in their home countries are also joining the movement.

In contrast, the South Korean government and educational institutions are increasingly engaging with Israel.

In July, the Yoon-Suk-Yeol government organized the largest ever technology cooperation event with Israel (“Korea-Israel Innovation Day”).

In June, Seoul National University opened an Israel Education Research Center and the Busan University of Foreign Studies appointed a former Israeli ambassador to South Korea as a professor by special appoinment in August. The local authorities of Jeonbuk-do and Jeonbuk National University are expanding cooperation with Israel in the defense industry.

All attempts to hold Israel’s bloody hand must be resisted.

On September 25, a ‘Student Day of Action for Palestine’ will be held to support the cause of Palestinian liberation and confront Israel and its collaborators. It is also significant that it is being held ahead of the anniversary of the ‘Second Intifada’ (September 28, 2000), which erupted against the ongoing occupation and persecution.

Let’s gather together at Hongik Univ. Station on September 25th and shout aloud for the liberation of Palestine!
