미국 컬럼비아대 학생들의 팔레스타인 연대 시위를 지지하자!

: 경찰 동원해 시위 학생들 체포한 대학 당국 규탄한다

미국 컬럼비아대 학생들이 팔레스타인인들에 대한 인종 학살을 벌이고 있는 이스라엘과의 관계를 단절하라고 대학 당국에 요구하면서 일주일 가까이 캠퍼스에서 팔레스타인 연대 농성을 벌이고 있다.

컬럼비아대 학생 활동가들은 “3만 명 이상의 팔레스타인이 죽는 것이 ‘정상’이고, 용인 가능한 일이고, 돈 되는 일로 여겨지는 사회를 받아들이길 거부한다”고 힘주어 말했다. 또한, 컬럼비아대 학생들은 베트남 전쟁 반대 운동과 남아프리카공화국의 아파르트헤이트에 맞섰던 자랑스러운 전통 위에 자신들이 서 있다면서, “컬럼비아대 학생으로서 팔레스타인인 인종 청소와 학살을 위한 공모에 맞서는 것은 우리의 책무”라고 밝혔다.

학생들이 정당하고, 평화롭게 시위를 벌였음에도 컬럼비아대 당국은 경찰력을 동원해 학생 100명 이상을 체포했다! 이것은 팔레스타인 연대 운동에 대한 탄압이자 표현의 자유에 대한 공격이다.

이스라엘 비판은 유대인 혐오 아니다

컬럼비아대 샤피크 총장은 경찰들이 학생들을 체포하기 하루 전날 미 의회에 출석해, “대학에서 반유대주의가 발붙이지 못하게 하겠다”면서 마치 팔레스타인 연대 시위가 유대인 혐오인양 몰아가려고도 했다. 이스라엘의 팔레스타인인 학살에 돈과 무기를 대 온 바이든 정부도 “반유대주의” 운운하면서 학생들을 비난했다. 미국 등 서방의 지배자들은 이스라엘을 편들면서 팔레스타인 연대 운동에 유대인 혐오 낙인을 찍으려 한다.

그러나 시온주의와 이스라엘의 인종 학살을 비판하고 팔레스타인인들의 독립과 해방을 요구하는 것은 결코 유대인 혐오가 아니다. 컬럼비아 대학의 농성에 함께하는 유대인 학생들은 “억압과 불의에 맞서는 유대교 전통을 계승하기 위해” 참가한다고 밝혔다. 컬럼비아 대학의 농성장에는 유대인들의 안식일 의식과 무슬림들의 기도 시간이 평화롭게 공존한다.

한편, 얼마 전 독일 정부는 베를린에서 열릴 예정이던 팔레스타인 연대 컨퍼런스를 ‘반유대주의’라면서 경찰 200여 명을 동원해 강제 해산하고 항의하는 참가자들에게 폭력을 휘둘렀다. 이 과정에서 유대인 활동가까지 체포됐다!

이스라엘(과 그 동맹들)이 이런 무지막지하고 얼토당토 않는 도덕적 비난과 공격을 펴는 것은 그러지 않으면 참혹한 팔레스타인인 인종 학살을 도무지 정당화할 수 없기 때문이다. 76년 동안 식민 점령하며 팔레스타인인들을 짓밟고 차별하고, 억압하고, 불과 6개월 동안 3만 4000명이나 학살한 천인공노할 반인류적 범죄는 어떤 방식으로도 변호할 수 없다!

언론 보도에 따르면, 미국 바이든 정부는 이스라엘의 라파 지상전 계획을 승인했다. 20일 하원은 대규모 지원 예산안을 통과시키는 등 미국 정부는 이스라엘의 편에 서서 팔레스타인인 학살을 돕고 있다.

그러나 미국의 다른 한 편에서는 정의롭고 양심적인 대학생들의 행동이 성장하고 있다. 컬럼비아대 학생들은 온갖 공격과 탄압 앞에서도 자신들은 결코 멈추지 않을 것이라고 선언했다. 하버드대, 예일대 등에서도 컬럼비아대 학생들을 지지하면서 연대 시위와 농성이 벌어지고 있다. 노동조합과 시민 활동가들의 지지 방문도 이어지고 있다.

우리는 대학 당국과 정부의 공격에 굴복하지 않고 용기 있게 팔레스타인 연대 운동을 이어나가고 있는 컬럼비아대 학생들, 그리고 이들과 함께하는 미국 대학생들의 행동에 진심으로 지지를 보낸다. 요르단강부터 지중해까지 팔레스타인인들이 독립하고 정의로운 평화가 깃드는 그 날까지 한국에서도 연대를 결코 멈추지 않을 것이다.

: We Condemn University Authorities for Using Police to Arrest Protesting Students

Students at Columbia University in the United States have been holding a Palestine solidarity vigil on campus for nearly a week, demanding that the university cut ties with Israel, which is committing genocide against Palestinians.

Columbia students said “We refuse to accept a world where the death of over 30,000 Palestinians is normal, acceptable, or profitable.”

They also stated that Columbia students stand in a proud tradition of opposing the Vietnam War and South Africa’s apartheid, and that “it is our responsibility to stand against our inherent complicity in genocide and ethnic cleansing from Palestine to Harlem.”

Despite the students’ legitimate, peaceful protest, Columbia authorities mobilised police forces and arrested over 100 students! This is a crackdown on Palestinian solidarity and an attack on freedom of expression.

Criticizing Israel is not anti-Semitic

Columbia’s president, Minouche Shafik, appeared in the US Congress the day before police arrested the students and tried to make it sound as if the Palestine solidarity protests were anti-Semitic. The Biden administration, which has provided money and weapons to Israel’s massacre of Palestinians, also accused the students of “anti-Semitism”. Western rulers in the US and elsewhere have sided with Israel and tried to brand the Palestine solidarity movement as anti-Semitic.

But criticizing Zionism, Israel’s genocide, and calling for Palestinian independence and liberation is in no way anti-Semitic. The Jewish students in Gaza Solidarity encampment said they are there to “continuing Jewish tradition of standing against oppression and injustice.” At liberation zone of the encampment, Jewish students celebrating Shabbat Shalom and Muslim students praying coexist peacefully.

Meanwhile, not long ago, the German government labelled a Palestinian solidarity conference scheduled to take place in Berlin as “anti-Semitic,” and mobilised more than 200 police officers to forcibly disperse it and used violence against protesting participants. Even a Jewish activist was arrested in the process!

Israel (and its allies) engages in such ignorant and ridiculous moral condemnations and attacks because it cannot otherwise justify the horrific genocide against Palestinians. There is no way to defend the heinous crimes against humanity of 76 years of colonialism, crushing, discriminating and oppressing the Palestinian people, and slaughtering 34,000 of them in just six months!

According to media reports, the Biden administration in the United States has approved Israel’s ground invasion plan in Rafah. On 20th, the House of Representatives passed a massive funding bill, so the US government is siding with Israel and helping it massacre Palestinians.

But on the other side, there is a growing movement of just and conscientious university student activism in the United States. Columbia University students have declared that they will not stop in the face of attacks and repression.

Solidarity demonstrations and sit-ins have been organized at Harvard, Yale, and other universities in support of the Columbia students. Supportive visits from labour unions and civic activists are also continuing.

We wholeheartedly support the actions of the Columbia students and their fellow American students who are courageously continuing their solidarity with Palestine in the face of attacks by university authorities and governments. We will never stop standing in solidarity with the Palestinian people until the day Palestinians achieve independence and a just peace “from the River to the Sea!”
